The Museum of Arts & Sciences (MOAS) in Daytona Beach is the primary art, science and history museum in Central Florida. The area’s largest museum, MOAS is nationally accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate. Cindy and I have been to many museums but nothing like this except for the Smithsonian in Washington DC.

So far, Cindy and I have been to two state parks: Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, and now Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero, Florida. This is the first of several posts I am going to make about Koreshan’s history and uniqueness.
In 1869, Dr. Cyrus Teed, an alchemist, was shocked into unconscious in his laboratory and conceived in a vision what would become known as “Koreshanity”, having what he called his “illumination,” where he saw God as a beautiful woman who revealed to him a series of universal truths which formed the fundamental principles of Koreshan belief. Seventeen years later the Koreshan Unity was formed in Chicago. Continue reading Koreshan State Historic Site and The Koreshan Unity Settlement→
Bill set his camera down on the beach at Anastasia State Park so the fiddler crabs would come out. He then asked our volunteer friends at the park to Continue reading Fiddler Crab Greetings→
We have been here at Anastasia State Park for four months now and this Sunday we are packing up and heading to Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero Florida just above Bonita Springs.
While we were here we enjoyed working as camp hosts, meeting new people working with the Rangers and other volunteers, we made new friends and had some great times.
Fishing here is really different from fishing in Virginia.
I did a little fishing and Jay, another one of the volunteers gave me a 6 foot cast net that I learned to throw like a pro and catch bait to fish with.
Today I was allowed to go on a sea turtle nest patrol with park ranger Drew Turner and we found a new nest of turtle eggs. Sea turtles only come in at night to lay eggs and the park rangers only go out in the morning at sunrise to see if any have come to shore and laid their eggs.
As we drove down the beach we looked for turtle tracks leading up to the sand dunes. We were told by a man named Doc that he had seen turtle tracks further down the beach and we headed towards the tracks. Continue reading My First Turtle Nest Patrol→
This past April, Cindy and I asked to volunteer at Anastasia State Park in St Augustine Florida. We looked up the website for the state parks in Florida, found the state parks that interested us (Anastasia was our first choice), clicked on their “get involved” link, and found that they needed volunteer camp hosts. We filled out an application on the Florida State website and called the volunteer coordinator for Anastasia, Renee Market, who took our information and told us she would get back to us.
It took about 2 weeks and Renee called us and told us she had a spot for us and we could stay 4 months. We have been here for 3 months and have to leave at the end of July but have already signed up for another 4 months here starting in May 2017. While we were in Fort Myers Florida we went to Babcock Wilderness Adventure and took the tour on their old school bus turned into a swamp buggy. We had a great time on the tour and if you are ever in Punta Gorda Florida take this tour. Well worth the time and money. And yes I bought the tee shirt:-) To see the video I created from our adventure, click “Continue reading” –> Continue reading Babcock Wilderness Adventure, Punta Gorda, Florida→
For the last 6 months Cindy and I have been living in a 300 sq. ft. travel trailer with 2 pull outs. Learning to live small has it’s challenges but it is also lots of fun. Part of the challenge is finding places to put all your stuff and anytime you go out and think of buying something you also need to know where you can put it.
Watching pelicans fly across the beach at sunrise.
We work for 20 hours a week usually 3 days on and 3 days off working 4 to 5 hours each day we are on. In return we get a free camping site with free water, electric and sewer. Now tell me where else you can go and live free while having a beautiful beach just down the street in walking distance. I cannot wait to get to Key Largo for Nov. and Dec. We are planning to go down to Key West for Christmas. There are many opportunities in both State and Federal parks to volunteer and stay and play! Continue reading Learning to live small!!→
