Leaving Anastasia State Park and Heading for New Adventures

We have been here at Anastasia State Park for four months now and this Sunday we are packing up and heading to Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero Florida just above Bonita Springs.

While we were here we enjoyed working as camp hosts, meeting new people  working with the Rangers and other volunteers, we made new friends and had some great times.

Fishing, Camping, Travel
Fishing here is really different from fishing in Virginia.

I did a little fishing and Jay, another one of the volunteers gave me a 6 foot cast net that I learned to throw like a pro and catch bait to fish with.

Down here in Florida they use artificial bait but also fiddler crabs, blue crabs and minnows.  Also if a fiddler crab get ahold of your finger it hurts…  LOL!! Continue reading Leaving Anastasia State Park and Heading for New Adventures

My First Turtle Nest Patrol

Today I was allowed to go on a sea turtle nest patrol with park ranger Drew Turner and we found a new nest of turtle eggs.  Sea turtles only come in at night to lay eggs and the park rangers only go out in the morning at sunrise to see if any have come to shore and laid their eggs.

As we drove down the beach we looked for turtle tracks leading up to the sand dunes.  We were told by a man named Doc that he had seen turtle tracks further down the beach and we headed towards the tracks. Continue reading My First Turtle Nest Patrol

Volunteering at State and National Parks

This past April, Cindy and I asked to volunteer at Anastasia State Park in St Augustine Florida.  We looked up the website for the state parks in Florida, found the state parks that interested us (Anastasia was our first choice), clicked on their “get involved” link, and found that they needed volunteer camp hosts.  We filled out an application on the Florida State website and called the volunteer coordinator for Anastasia, Renee Market, who took our information and told us she would get back to us.

It took about 2 weeks and Renee called us and told us she had a spot for us and we could stay 4 months.  We have been here for 3 months and have to leave at the end of July but have already signed up for another 4 months here starting in May 2017.  Continue reading Volunteering at State and National Parks
